Writing Development Timeline

12-18 months: Random mark-making. Any mark = success.
18m-2y: Intentional scribbling begins.
2-3y: Circular motions, representational drawing begins.
3-4y: Pre-writing shapes develop — the components of every letter.
4-5y: Letter-like forms appear; name letters begin.
5-6y: Most children write first name; letter reversals still normal.

The Pre-Writing Shapes Hierarchy

Before any letter work, master these shapes in developmental order: vertical line → horizontal line → circle → cross → right diagonal → square → left diagonal → X → triangle. If a child struggles with letters, check whether they've mastered these underlying shapes first.

Creating a Writing-Rich Home

Children surrounded by writing tools and paper practice more. Keep pencils and paper accessible. Let them see you writing. Make it a normal, enjoyable part of daily life rather than a school-associated chore.

The Most Important Factor

Positive association. Children who enjoy drawing and writing seek more practice. More practice builds more skill. The emotional environment you create around pencil time matters more than the specific activities you choose.
