Problem 1: Fist Grip

Looks like: All fingers wrapped around pencil like a hammer handle.
Normal through: Age 2.5. Concerning if persisting past age 4.
Fix: Switch to triangular pencils, use pinch-and-drop technique. Consult OT if persisting past age 5.

Problem 2: Thumb Wrap

Looks like: Thumb wraps over the index finger instead of opposing it.
Fix: Rubber pencil grip aids (three-hole type) redirect thumb placement. Triangular pencils help. Consistent gentle correction.

Problem 3: Death Grip

Looks like: Correct finger placement but squeezing the pencil very tightly, causing fatigue and sometimes pain.
Fix: Soft-lead pencils that make marks with light pressure. Practice "butterfly touch" writing. Hand relaxation breaks during practice.

Problem 4: Too-High Grip

Looks like: Fingers placed far up the barrel, far from the tip.
Fix: Mark a line on the pencil showing where fingers should go. Triangular pencils with ribbed grip zones help naturally.

When to Consult an OT

If your child is over 5 with persistent grip problems affecting their ability or willingness to write, or if they complain of hand pain during writing — a pediatric occupational therapist can help. Most grip issues are very addressable with targeted early intervention.
